Garden Education at Toledo Elementary
For over 15 years, Toledo Elementary School has been nurturing young minds through its vibrant Garden Science program. In partnership with the WSU Master Gardener program, students from kindergarten through fifth grade—over 450 in total—engage with the natural world in hands-on, seasonal lessons that bring science to life.
Twice a month from September through June, Master Gardener volunteers join classrooms to explore topics like plant biology, soil health, pollination, and the magic of composting. Together, they help care for and transform the school garden into a living laboratory where curiosity blooms and learning takes root.
Students learn a wide variety of skills by participating in the program, including:
Scientific Discovery
Kids become mini scientists as they explore plant biology, ecosystems, and the mysteries of the natural world—right in the garden.

Environmental Awareness
Through lessons about composting, pollinator care, and sustainability, students learn how their choices impact the planet.

Personal Growth & Life Skills
Watering plants and pulling weeds build patience, responsibility, and teamwork—lifelong skills rooted in everyday action.

Creativity & Curiosity
The garden inspires wonder and imagination, inviting kids to ask bold questions and express themselves through design and storytelling.
